About

Sha’ri Bin Mohd Yusof

I am a passionate educator. I profess in Quality Engineering and Management, Lean Manufacturing and Operations Management. My passion is in sharing my knowledge as much as possible.

Born on 14th August 1961 in Singapore and began my early education in SRJK Inggeris Kulai, Johore Malaysia. In 1974, I started my secondary school in a newly set up fully boarding school, Sekolah Menengah Sains Johor Kluang and completed my Malaysia Certificate of Education in 1978.

Having completed my secondary school, I was selected by the Ministry of Education under scholarship to continue my degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Miami in Fall of 1979 until completion in May 1983. After graduating from the USA in 1983, I was selected to be part of the Proton National Car project and went to Japan with the P2 Group of Engineers and spent one year training in Body Assembling in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Mizushima, Japan. Upon completion of the training, he was involved in the beginning years of starting production in Proton in the Body Assembling Section until 1987. After that I was transferred to the Quality Control Department which gave me experience on localization of parts and vendor development program for exporting cars to UK which require a GSP local content of 60%.

In January 1990, I left the automotive industry to pursue my dream of becoming an academic/lecturer in the Fakulti Kejuruteraan Jentera (Mechanical Engineering) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Skudai. The first subject I taught was Project Management (in Bahasa Malaysia which I had to translate the chapters with colleagues in Industrial Engineering Panel). I was also required to teach the Metrology Lab for Diploma as well as Degree students. In September 1992, I left for UK and pursued my Master of Science in Integrated Quality Systems from University of Birmingham and completed that in one year. In December 1996, I once again went to UK but now to pursue my PhD looking at the implementation framework of TQM for small manufacturing business from the University of Birmingham.

I am now serving as Professor (Contract) with the Graduate School of Business Administration, Meiji University Japan since April 2020. Due to Covid-19, I had to teach on-line from Malaysia, and will, InsyaAllah going to Japan soon (hopefully early September 2022). I retired in 2019 as Professor of Quality Engineering and Management in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with 30 years of experience including managing numerous research projects and supervising more than 30 PhD and master research candidates in topics relating to Quality Management, Robust Quality Engineering, Sustainability, Lean Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering. I am a Registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ).

I possess wide experience in PhD supervision, examination and act as auditor with MQA and as examiners for many local universities. I have also published extensively in national, international journals and conferences. Providing training to a number of organizations including Proton, IWK, Hitachi Chemical, Mitsubishi in various topics of Quality Engineering, ISO 9001, Industrial Engineering, and Project Management in Malaysia and One recent training in 2019 was for Sudanese engineers on the topic of Operations Excellence was very satisfying.
